Edwards studied natural history, especially birds, including foreign specimens brought into the Port of London. A naturalist as well as an artist, he aimed to make his work as accurate as possible, etching his own plates, and either colouring them by hand himself or supervising the work of others. His chief patron was Hans Sloane. Probably acquired by George III, by 1780 Cat. 181
