The early Georgian period saw a new style of silver, developing from the rather austere and plain lines of the early eighteenth century, to the exuberant Rococo, characterised by flamboyant curves and motifs drawn from nature. The style was associated with the most fashionable French plate and although adopted enthusiastically by Frederick, Prince of Wales, for example, in the cup by Paul de Lamerie (cat. 275), its use was not universal and more traditional forms were retained in the royal household.
