The British Herbal grew out of an earlier work devoted to the practical and domestic use of herbs and plants. It was intended for the amateur gardener who had an interest in the medical and ornamental properties of plants, but little technical knowledge. Hill continued to use the old names of plants, rather than Linnaeus’s new method, which laid the foundation for modern plant description. Acquired by George III Cat. 186
