After his victory at Prestonpans, Prince Charles Edward marched south, crossing the border with England on 8 November and taking the city of Carlisle a week later. A key site in the defence of north-west England, royal forces under the Duke of Cumberland rushed to retake the town, which the Jacobite garrison quickly surrendered.
