After his victory at Prestonpans, Prince Charles Edward marched south, crossing the border with England on 8 November and taking the city of Carlisle a week later. A key site in the defence of north-west England, royal forces under the Duke of Cumberland rushed to retake the town, which the Jacobite garrison quickly surrendered. Prince Charles Edward and his forces returned to Scotland, where they would meet Cumberland’s army at Culloden in April 1746. King’s Military Map Collection Cat. 57
