This impressive equestrian bronze of William III is one of approximately twenty known variants representing several European rulers in almost exactly the same way. The design probably stems from a scheme by the Flemish sculptor Martin Desjardins for a monument to Louis XIV. Throughout the reigns of the first two Georges, William III was honoured with numerous large equestrian monuments erected in British cities. First recorded in the Royal Collection in 1812 Cat. 8
