It is possible to see in this magnificent work the qualities admired by Georgian collectors, particularly in the sculptural and idealised figure group, loosely borrowed from Raphael. We can also see those qualities which appealed to anti-academic artists: a vivid evocation of flesh and blood and of atmospheric light which seems to permeate the entire composition.
