With this ambitious design, Vanbrugh imagined a completely new south façade of St James’s Palace, dominated by a giant portico towards the Mall. Whilst entirely replacing the original State Apartments and the royal family’s private quarters (in pink), the architect simultaneously aimed to preserve the most important historic elements of the Palace, such as the Tudor Gate House, the Chapel Royal and Inigo Jones’s Queen’s Chapel (in grey).
