During the reign of George II, Benjamin Goodison was cabinet-maker to the King and Queen and to their son, Frederick, Prince of Wales, for whom this table was probably made. The top is executed in gilded gesso, a technique prevalent at the beginning of the century, and the base is largely carved and gilded wood, a technique that gradually replaced fragile gilt-gesso. Probably supplied to George II or Frederick, Prince of Wales, c.1730 Cat. 109
