‘Frank Halls’ was moderately well known and appreciated by Georgian collectors, who regarded him as a more boisterous version of Van Dyck. Reynolds felt that his portraits had a ‘strong-marked character of individual nature’ because the features were ‘well put together’ and that he lacked only the ‘patience in finishing what he had so correctly planned’. First recorded in the Royal Collection in 1795 Cat. 142
