In December 1754, Lieutenant-General Edward Braddock was sent from Britain to take control of Fort Duquesne (now part of Pittsburgh) on the Monongahela River. The fort had recently been constructed by the French on disputed land. Braddock and his men were ambushed about ten miles from the fort on 9 July.
