It was only after George I’s first visit to Hampton Court in 1714 that the Queen’s Gallery, originally built for William III, was completed. The tapestry series visible in Cattermole’s watercolour depicts the Life of Alexander the Great and was woven in the workshop of Judocus de Vos, based on cartoons by Charles Le Brun. It was probably acquired by George I expressly to adorn the walls of the Queen’s Gallery. Probably acquired by George IV Cat. 35
