Bigot was a French artist working in Italy in the style of Caravaggio. Here he re-stages the biblical story as an everyday modern scene, in which an ordinary oil lamp suggests the Light of the World. This work is first listed in the Royal Collection as by Honthorst. Probably acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales Cat. 130
