Members of fashionable society spent several hours each morning attending levees of this type, often simply for conversation or musical entertainment, although sometimes to seek favours from the host. At this date the price of tea, which was heavily taxed, was high and by association the tea service was of great value. It is therefore shown prominently by Laroon to indicate the wealth of the hostess. First recorded in the Royal Collection in 1903 Cat. 312
