Nineteenth Century

During the nineteenth century, composition ornament came to the forefront and large frames with complex ornament could be made quickly and easily. Older styles were often updated with this new material to create familiar, though far more ornate frames. The use of glazing also became more prevalent as a way to protect the paintings from the pollution of the Industrial Revolution.
