Pantomime Costume

Between 1941 and 1944, whilst spending time at the Royal Lodge in the grounds of Windsor Castle, Princess Elizabeth and her sister, Princess Margaret appeared in a pantomime each Christmas, to raise funds for the Royal Household Wool Fund.

The costumes that they wore in the pantomime Aladdin in 1943 went on display for the first time as part of the Fashioning a Reign exhibition at Windsor Castle.  The young Princesses helped to make the costumes themselves - Princess Elizabeth for the title character, Aladdin, and Princess Margaret for her character, Princess Rozanna.  It is believed that the oriental style costumes used furnishing fabric that had once been in the State Rooms at Windsor Castle.
