The morning of 29 April was spent visiting the Great Mosque, also known as the Umayyad Mosque. The mosque was constructed on the site of a Christian basilica following the Muslim conquest of the city in 634. The head of St John the Baptist, revered by Muslims and Christians alike, is believed to be enshrined within the mosque. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
