Rashaya was the scene of a massacre in June 1860. Around 300 Christians were killed in the mostly Druze-inhabited town. In July, shortly afterwards, the conflict escalated and spread towards Damascus. Visiting almost two years later, the Prince wrote in his journal that ‘we saw still the remains of the burnt houses’.
