Baalbek, known by the Romans as Heliopolis (‘City of the Sun’), was one of the largest temple complexes in the Roman empire. Today this temple is more properly known as the Temple of Bacchus, although it was dedicated to Venus. It was completed in about AD 150. The famous falling keystone in the centre of the doorway has been painted and photographed by many artists. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
