The eight-part papyrus which was discovered during an excavation attended by the Prince of Wales was the subject of this study by the Egyptologist Samuel Birch. He wrote that ‘the Prince was desirous that whatever benefit might accrue to science from the careful study of this Papyrus should not be lost.’ In 1866, Birch became Keeper of Oriental Antiquities (which included Egypt) at the British Museum. Acquired for the Royal Library, c.1863
