Mar Saba, founded in AD 483 in the name of St Sabas, is considered to be one of the oldest monasteries in the world. The buildings are carved into the side of the cliff face, high above the Kidron River. Because of its location near Jerusalem, the monastery was attacked by numerous invading armies over the years, including the European Crusaders in the twelfth century. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
