Samaria was an important city within the ancient Kingdom of Israel. It has traditionally been associated with St John the Baptist. This church, which dates from the fifth century, was believed to mark the burial site of the head of St John the Baptist. The body was buried nearby. Today the Great Mosque of Damascus claims to hold the head of the saint. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
