Berthe Morisot was one of the central figures of the French Impressionist group, who organised exhibitions of their work in the 1870s and 1880s independently of the official Salon. This graceful drawing depicts Morisot’s young daughter, Julie, and was probably made as a preparatory sketch for a painting. Its deft economy of line conveys a sense of freshness and simplicity.
