Serfdom, a form of slavery which tied peasants to landowners, practised since medieval times, was only abolished in Russia by Alexander II with his Edict of Emancipation in 1861. This image is remarkable from an historical perspective, as it was only after the Emancipation that peasants started appearing regularly as the subject of photographs.
