This vase was made at the private stone carving factory owned by the noble Demidov family, who benefitted from their own exclusive source of malachite in the Ural Mountains. The design, with gilt-bronze foliage and flowers around the vase and the pedestal, is in the fashionable neo-rococo style. The vase was exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851.

Purchased by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, 1851.
