On the occasion of The Queen’s twenty-first birthday on 21 April 1947 she was presented with a necklace of twenty-one graduated brilliant-cut diamonds by the Government of the Union of South Africa, where she was accompanying her parents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on their tour of the country. The detachable snap-piece was added afterwards, having been presented to the Princess when she visited the Big Hole Mine at Kimberley.  In 1952 the necklace was shortened to 15 large stones and a bracelet was made from the six stones that were removed together with the detachable snap-piece.
