Salt Island, one of the archipelago which makes up the British Overseas Territory of the British Virgin Islands, formerly paid the monarch an annual rent of a pound of salt on their birthday. This tradition was reintroduced in 2015 by the Governor-General, with this example being presented for The Queen's 90th Birthday in 2016. The bag is printed with a scene of an islander, Clementine Smith, collecting salt from the edge of a pool.
Provenance
Sent to Queen Elizabeth II by the Governor of the British Virgin Islands, John Duncan, on the occasion of her 90th birthday, 2016
The bag and silk print front-piece were specially commissioned from a Virgin Islands artist, Mr Aragorn Dick-Read.
To commemorate Her Majesty's birthday on the Virgin Islands, a parade took place by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, schools and voluntary organisations and a Royal Naval contingent from Her Majesty's Ship, Mersey, also participated. The Virgin Islands celebrations concluded with in the lighting of beacons across Her Majesty's realm.
