-
A kente cloth from the Asante people of Ghana, made of thin strips of vividly dyed silk and cotton woven together by hand on a loom. Kente cloths are traditionally worn wrapped around the body with the loose end draped over the left shoulder. Different patterns have different names, often associated with particular rulers, animals or plants. Some designs are restricted to royal owners. They have come to be a symbol of West African, and particularly Ghanaian, identity.
Provenance
Presented to Queen Elizabeth II during an Audience with the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, 24 October 2014.
