A folio from a sketchbook or patternbook. On the recto: The centaur Nessus carrying off Deianira. The composition corresponds in reverse with an etching after Parmigianino, marked 'F.P' (not described in Bartsch XVI; impression in the British Museum).
On the verso: Minerva or Bellona. The composition corresponds in the same direction with a chiaroscuro woodcut (Bartsch XII, p. 122, no. 23); the original is probably the drawing at Chatsworth.
This folio is en suite in style, technique and style with seven of the eight leaves from a small album at Windsor (RCIN 991341-8). The odd-one-out in that album, 991347, must at some early date have been swapped with the present leaf in another album that formerly housed 991397-404. That other album, then containing the present folio, was purchased in 1935 from the collection of J.P. Heseltine; it had been in the collection of Jonathan Richardson the Elder, and the swap must therefore have occurred by the early eighteenth century. For more information about RCIN 991341-8 see the entry for RCIN 991341.
Provenance
In the seventeenth century, in the same album as RCIN 991341-6, '8; removed, and then in the collection of Jonathan Richardson (1665-1745; his collector's mark, Lugt 2183, stamped on the verso); collection of J.P. Heseltine (1843-1829; his inscribed initials, Lugt 1508, recto); his sale, Sotheby's, 28 May 1935; bought for the Royal Library (in an album with RCIN 991397-991400, 991402-4).
