A folio from a small sketchbook or pattern book. On the recto: A female figure supporting a column, the personification of Fortitude. The drawing derives from a design by Parmigianino: the original is probably the sheet at Chatsworth, and the design is also seen in an anonymous etching inscribed 'F.P.' (Bartsch XVI, p. 23, no. 14) and in numerous other copies, including RCIN 991348r.
On the verso: A seated philosopher, facing right, with a pair of dividers, possibly Archimedes. The drawing derives from a design by Parmigianino and is seen in numerous other copies, including RCIN 991342r.Provenance
From the collection of Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830; his TL mark, Lugt 2445, stamped on the recto); collection of J.P. Heseltine (1843-1929; his initials, Lugt 1508, inscribed on the recto); his sale, Sotheby's, 28 May 1935 (a small album containing RCINs 991397-404); bought for the Royal Library.
