A folio from a small sketchbook or pattern book. On the recto: The female figure of Minerva or Bellona, profile right, advancing to the right, in flowing drapery, holding a shield in her left hand, her right arm raised. The drawing derives from a design by Parmigianino: the original is probably the sheet at Chatsworth, and the design is also seen in an anonymous chiaroscuro woodcut (Bartsch XII, p. 122, no. 23) and numerous other copies, including RCIN 991401v.
On the verso: The Centaur Nessus, advancing to the right, carrying off Dejanira (though another female figure is present too). The drawing derives from a design by Parmigianino: the original is probably the sheet at Chatsworth (the other side of the sheet that also contains the Minerva above), and the design is also seen in an etching inscribed 'F.P.' and in numerous other copies, including RCIN 991401r.Provenance
From the collection of Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830; his TL mark, Lugt 2445, stamped on the verso); collection of J.P. Heseltine (1843-1929; his initials, Lugt 1508, inscribed on the verso); his sale, Sotheby's, 28 May 1935 (a small album containing RCINs 991397-404); bought for the Royal Library.
