The Birth of St John the Baptist 1525-75
-
A drawing of a busy scene in St Elizabeth's bedchamber as she lays in her bed, left, while the newborn St John is bathed by a group of women, foreground, right. Arched top. Inscribed lower left, 'IL CORo', presumably for Correggio; and at centre, in the 'Deceptive hand', 'Benvenuto Garofalo'.
The drawing is a copy from a composition by Giulio Romano engraved by Diana Ghisi (Scultori, Mantovani; Bartsch XV, p. 443, no. 26). Another version in the same technqiue was sold at Christies, 25 June 1968, lot 50; a smaller version is in the Louvre, inv. 4268 (Cordellier & Py, Raphael, 1992, no. 1062); a weaker copy was sold at Drouot, Paris, 11 April 1924.Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 125, ‘Two Volumes of large Drawings called Opere Varie’, Tom. I, ‘The Birth of J:C: call'd Benvenuto Garofolo, but more like….Guilio Romana.’ [sic]
