After Polidoro da Caravaggio (c. 1499-1543)
Niobe and her children c.1600
-
A large copy after a portion of the frieze of the story of Niobe, painted by Polidoro on the facade of Palazzo Milesi, Rome. Niobe seated left, shielding one daughter, the other six fleeing to the left, pursued by Diana who aims an arrow; to the right, portions of four horses and one of Niobe's sons with an arrow through his back.
The drawing (with RCIN 991261-4, which are en suite) reproduce the frieze in reverse; they are however in the same direction as the set of engravings by Jan Saenredam after Hendrick Goltzius (1594; Bartsch III, p. 231, no. 33.a-h) and are presumably copied from those prints, though they are on a significantly larger scale. The pen-work and wash modelling are very fine, though the wash is not uniformly applied across all five drawings. The purpose of these drawings is unknown: the scale suggests that they were intended to serve some practical function, rather than simply being records of Polidoro's composition. -
