A woman being seized by a sea-god c.1630-40
-
A carefully finished drawing of a nymph being seized by a sea-god, assisted by three tritons.
The drawing belongs to a series of erotic-mythological works executed by the artist towards the end of his career. The triton in the right may be related to the executioner on the right of Christ in a painting by Cesari dated 1636; a similar drawing of nymphs, in pastel and datable to the 1630s, is at Holkham Hall.
Provenance
Listed in the collection of James II, c.1685-88 (Bathoe edition, p. 48, no. 549), as 'A drawing in Red Chalk being three Tritons & a woman. Josepino'. Subsequently at Hampton Court, inv. 237; sent to the Royal Library c.1862.
