Attributed to Pirro Ligorio (c. 1513-1583)
An unidentified allegorical or mythological subject 1525-75
-
A drawing of a mythological or allegorical scene: Minerva (?) seated, distributing lengths of chain to a group of old men.
The attribution to Ligorio, first suggested by Frederick Antal (in P&W), follows from that of RCIN 905073, which has an old attribution to Ligorio.
John Gere however noted that the two figures at far left of this composition are found repeated on the verso of a sheet in the Uffizi by the young Taddeo Zuccaro (inv. 6397F; see J. Gere, Taddeo Zuccaro, 1969, pp. 54-5); Gere concluded that either the Uffizi study is a copy of the present, or that the present drawing might in fact be by the young Taddeo (and he also suggested that 905073 might be by Taddeo; loc. cit.). But the Uffizi study has the defined look of a copy, and the former scenario is more likely. Gere had earlier connected the present drawing with a sheet by Taddeo Zuccaro in the Ashmolean Museum (Parker II.464, previously as Baldassarre Peruzzi; Gere 1969, no. 155). But his ultimate conclusion was that 'it seems best to consider the attribution of the [present] drawing to Taddeo as 'not proven'.'Provenance
Presumably Royal Collection by c.1800, but not identifiable in George III's Inventory A.
