The Adoration of the Shepherds c.1530
Red chalk, pen and ink, wash and white heightening, on paper washed pink; the outlines incised | 39.3 x 30.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 991232
-
A drawing of the Madonna lifting a drapery to reveal the Christ Child in a crib, with an angel supporting his head. Joseph behind to the right, and another kneeling bearded figure to the left, presumably a shepherd; other figures in the background (the two midwives?), and a rearing horseman in the distance. Badly damaged along the central fold.
The drawing was attributed by Popham to Bernardino Gatti (Popham and Wilde 1949, no. 339, noting a related drawing in the Uffizi, 1957-F). K. Oberhuber recognised Gandini's authorship (Master Drawings, Autumn 1970, p. 282). This is Gandini's largest and most imposing drawing, the media worked into one another to give a colourism that rivals Correggio's most painterly studies. No painting is known, but the incising of the outlines suggests that the design was transferred to a small devotional panel.
