Giuseppe Passeri (1654-1714)
St Bernard received into Citeaux by St Stephen c. 1675-1700
-
A drawing of a group of figures at the entrance to the Abbey of Cîteaux, with St Stephen embracing St Bernard while a host of cherubs carrying a cross hovers above them. This is a compostion study for the painting in the Museum at Dijon, formerly in the Abbey of Cîteaux. It was a pendant to The Cessation of the Schism of Anacletus, hitherto also attributed to Passeri, but probably by Pietro di Pietri (see RCIN 905661). The drawing corresponds exactly with the painting, but is in reverse.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c. 1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 110: 'Mostly Historical, Sacred and Profane, The first Drawing is the Design for a large Altar Piece, of St. Benedict receiving a young Prince in his Convent, which is Engrav'd.')
