Jacopo Bertoia (1544-74)

A study for Bertoia's fresco in the Sala delle Geste Rossiane of the Rocca di San Secondo, Parma: a commander riding in triumph to the gate of a city under a baldachin, the fringes of which are decorated with heraldic lions and fleurs-de-lys; in the background, a cavalry engagement; on the banners of the combatants, a lion rampant and fleurs-de-lys. The scheme is not closely documented but probably dates to the second half of the 1560s; all surviving preparatory studies are by Bertoia.
The drawing had been earlier attributed to Bernardo Castello (pencil note of the C18th on the mount; followed by Popham in P&W). F. Antal (review of P&W, Burlington Magazine, 1951, p.32) suggested instead Giovanni de' Vecchi. The association with Bertoia's frescoes was made by A. Ghidiglia Quintavalle, Il Bertoia, 1963, p. 56.
