St Andrew led to Martyrdom 1650 - 1700
Red chalk. | 40.6 x 65.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 991122

After Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
St Andrew led to Martyrdom 1650 - 1700
-
A large drawing copying Guido Reni's fresco of c.1609 in San Gregorio Magno, Rome.
George III's Inventory A attributed this and another drawing (991123) copying Domenichino's Scourging of St Andrew in the same chapel to 'Beretono', presumably meaning Niccolo Berrettoni rather than Pietro da Cortona. Blunt (in B(R), under no. 14) accepted the attributions, but the two drawings are not by the same hand; the present drawing is more acceptable as Berretoni than is 991123.
Provenance
Listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800-20, p. 158, 'The leading him to be Crucified, The St: Adoring the Cross, NB- This Drawing is from the Painting of Guido, both of which are painted in Fresco in a Chapel adjoining to the Church of St: Gregorio at Rome (These Drawings are by Beretono Scholar to Carlo Maratte.)'
