An offset of a studio drawing depicting an allegory of Winter and Spring: Janus, stands in the centre as he closes the gates of War, thus shutting out Winter and the accompanying winds, and clearing the way for Spring and her associated goddesses gathering on the right. This composition was engraved by Robert van Audenaerde.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 158: 'A Calk, from one of Carlo Marattes drawings')
