An elevation and plan for the altar of S Giovanni dei Fiorentini: a sculpted relief of the Baptism of Christ under a curved pediment supported by Corinthian columns, with the Holy Ghost in the tympanum. In the attic above God the Father hovers over the scene. This structure was begun by Pietro da Cortona in the late 1630s and, after a long interruption, continued by Borromini from 1664 until his death in 1667, after which it was completed by Ciro Ferri. The plan (on a slightly different scale to the elevation), and the inscription are on a separate piece of paper. The inscription reads: Disegno fatto da Ciro Ferri per l'Altar Maggiore di S Gio. de Fiorentini fatto poi dal Borromino come presentemente si vede quale e della Casa Falconieri. The altar as erected bears little resemblance to Cortona's drawing.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani
