The Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes c.1530-40

A carefully-finished drawing of figures from a composition of the Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes. The drawing is an exact replica, on the same scale, of the lower left portion of a modello in the Louvre, for a mural by Bagnacavallo and/or Biagio Pupini, formerly in the refectory of San Salvatore, Bologna, destroyed in the nineteenth century (Louvre, inv. 4283; D. Cordellier & B. Py, Raphael, Son Atelier, Ses Copistes, 1992, p. 642, no. 1050; a photograph by Charles Thurston Thompson at RCIN 850515). The present drawing is presumably a copy of the Louvre sheet, but its damaged condition makes a judgment of quality imnpossible.
The composition was engraved by Giovanni Battista de' Cavalieri, in the same sense and on the same scale, but with differences of detail and with the invention ascribed to Raphael (impression at RCIN 850513).
The present drawing was tentatively attributed to Innocenzo da Imola by Popham (in P&W), on the basis of the resemblance to Innocenzo's frescoes of 1542 in the Villa della Viola, Bologna. A copy of the lower right portion of the same composition is at RCIN 990044, by a different hand, probably Pupini. -
