The Entombment c.1525-30
Pen and ink, on paper tinted pink. Verso: red chalk | 19.7 x 14.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 990539
-
A drawing of a man holding the body of Christ on the edge of the tomb, with a weeping woman behind. Apparently a study towards a composition of the Entombment, engraved in 1543 by Enea Vico (Bartsch XV, p. 284, no. 6), and some form of which was etched by Hendrick van der Borcht when in the Arundel collection.
On the verso, the head and bust of a woman holding her right hand to her breast, probably intended for a Cleopatra. The pink tinting of the sheet, seen on the recto, extends only across half of the verso, to a hard fold.Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, p. 123, ‘Coreggio Parmegiano &ca.’, no. 24, ‘Joseph of Arimethea,- V.M. & dead Christ....Do [ie. ‘with a Pen’]’
