Hercules and Cerberus 1525 - 1600
-
A drawing of Hercules, seen from behind, wrestling with the three-headed dog Cerberus, standing on its hind legs. The drawing copies a composition by Parmigianino, recorded in an anonymous etching (Bartsch XVI, p. 23, no. 15) and in other copies, including RCIN 991345v. Popham (in P&W) noted that the style suggests Andrea Schiavone.
Provenance
Listed in George III's Inventory A, p. 123, 'Coreggio Parmegiano &ca.', no. 31, 'Hercules encountering Cerebus.'
