Parmigianino (Parma 1503-Casalmaggiore 1540)
Daniel and an angel c.1525
-
A tiny drawing of the head of a bearded man in right profile, with another head behind.
This fragment is a study for the heads of Daniel and the angel in an oval composition of Daniel in the Lions' Den, of which versions exist in the British Museum (three studies on two sheets, 1905,1110.36-7), in the Staedel in Frankfurt, and elsewhere. Another version, now in the gallery in Parma, was engraved by Benigno Bossi (Weigel 5786), and there are two further studies of the head of Daniel also in the British Museum (1905,1110.38, 40).Provenance
From a small album of 30 drawings by Parmigianino, listed in 1727 at Kensington Palace; the album probably from the collection of Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel, and probably acquired by Charles II.
