Giulio Campi (1502-72)
Jupiter and Semele c.1545-50
-
A drawing of Jupiter emerging from clouds to clutch the recoiling figure of Semele by the arm; at upper left, Juno in her chariot drawn by peacocks.
The drawing was traditionally attibuted to Giulio Romano. P. Pouncey attributed the drawing to Giulio Campi (note on mount, 1971); it is one of a series of studies by Campi for frescoes of the loves of the gods in Palazzo Aldegatti, Mantua, of c.1545-50. A copy of the present drawing is in the British Museum (1946,0713.356): see Hugo Chapman's database entry for that drawing on the British Museum website for details of the many extant drawings connected with the cycle. drawing | British MuseumProvenance
From the collection of William Gibson (his inscription, verso, 'Julio Romano 4.3.'); presumably acquired by Charles II. Probably in the album listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800-20, p. 52, 'Guilio [sic] Romano, Polidoro, e Perino del Vaga. Tom. 1. Containing 49 Drawings not entered.'
