Circle of Giulio Romano (Rome c. 1499-Mantua 1546)
Three putti among vines 1540-50
-
A drawing of three putti seated among vines, the centre one eating a bunch of grapes. Presumably connected with the series of tapestries of putti playing, the Giochi di putti, designed by Giulio 1539-45 for cardinal Ercola Gonzaga (see Giulio Romano, Mantua 1989, pp. 474-8); the drawing is probably a workshop copy rather than a preparatory sheet.
Provenance
Probably from the album listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800-20, p. 52, 'Guilio [sic] Romano, Polidoro, e Perino del Vaga. Tom. 1. Containing 49 Drawings not entered.'
