Copy after Michelangelo Buonarroti (Caprese 1475-Rome 1564)
Studies of an arm, and a Hercules c.1550-1600
-
On the recto, five slightly varied views of a flexed left arm, the hand holding a stone; a whole length figure of Hercules resting on his club, and a head similar to the Hercules but tilted in the other direction. On the verso, two further views of the same flexed arm.
The studies of an arm on both sides of the sheet appear to be drawn from a three-dimensional model after Michelangelo's David (Accademia, Florence). The left arm of the sculpture was broken off in 1527 and restored in 1543; possibly the model of the arm was made on the occasion of the restoration. The draughtsman was probably a Florentine artist of the latter half of the sixteenth century.Provenance
Presumably in the collection of George III; earlier provenance unknown.
