Red chalk | 40.2 x 25.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 990458

After Michelangelo Buonarroti (Caprese 1475-Rome 1564)
Two female figures, from the Last Judgment 1550 - 1700
-
A copy of a detail in Michelangelo’s Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel - the mother and daughter to the left among the Blessed. The drawing is carefully worked and difficult to date - J. Wilde (Popham and Wilde 1949, no. 495) thought it about 1600, but it could be up to a century later, of the school of Carlo Maratti.
Provenance
Probably among the drawings listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800, p. 44, 'Mich: Angelo Buonarroti’, Tom. I,: ‘33 to 40 Studies for seperate figures, in the last Day's Judgement; with a Pen; and in Black and Red Chalk.'
