On the recto, a red-chalk study of a nude man seen from behind, seated and twisting. Popham (in P&W 1949) recognised that this is a study for the figure immediately to the right of Moses in Moses Breaking the Tables of the Law, on the pavement in the Duomo in Siena; the design paid for on 30 August 1531. At upper right, two sketches of women's heads, and below, an architectural sketch with what might be perspectival projection lines. Inscribed at lower right 'Michel Ange' and '28', and the stamp of J.D. Lempereur (Lugt 1740) at lower right. The figure is clearly inspired by the seated bather at the centre of Michelangelo's Battle of Cascina, which presumably led to the early inscribed attribution, and the sheet seems to have been acquired by George III as an original work by Michelangelo.
On the verso, a study of a draped figure turned to the left, apparently for the figure above and left of the Golden Calf in the same scene as the study on the recto. To the right, two sketches of figures in circles, perhaps for the Personification of Justice on the ceiling of the Sala del Concistorio in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, the scheme commissioned from Beccafumi on 5 April 1529, completed 2 August 1535.Provenance
From the collection of J.D. Lempereur (1701-1779; his stamp, Lugt 1740); thus acquired by George III, apparently as a work by Michelangelo. Listed in George III's 'Inventory A,' c.1800, p.44 (Mich: Angelo Buonarroti. / Tom. I.), no. 30: 'A Sketch; part with a….Pen….and part in….Red Chalk.'
