Attributed to Lelio Orsi (1508/11-87)
The Entombment 1525 - 1600

A drawing of the apostles crowded around a sarcophagus as the body of Christ is lowered in; the Virgin fainting in the background. Popham (in P&W): 'This odd and provincial-looking composition seems to be by a follower of Giulio Romano.' But Popham had earlier proposed an attribution to Lelio Orsi (note on mount), and the eccentric figure types, draperies and method of composition do seem to place the drawing closer to Orsi than to Giulio.
Provenance
Probably from the album listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800-20, p. 52, 'Guilio [sic] Romano, Polidoro, e Perino del Vaga. Tom. 1. Containing 49 Drawings not entered.'
